About Territorial Army : The Indian Territorial Army (TA) is the second line of defence after the Regular Indian Army. The present role of the Territorial Army is to relieve the regular army from static duties and assist civil administration in dealing with natural calamities and maintenance of essential. Presently, the Territorial Army has an approximately 40, 000 persons. Candidates can join the Territorial Army as Officers and Junior Commissioned Officers (JCO). The Territorial Army Officers (Non-Departmental) is done for Ex-Servicemen and Civilians. For Civilians, the recruitment is done for Territorial Army Officers (Non-Departmental).

Presently the Territorial Army has a strength of approx fifty thousand personnel comprising of Departmental TA units such as Railway, IOC, ONGC, and Non Departmental TA units of Infantry Battalion (TA) including Home & Hearth Battalions, Ecological Battalion (TA) affiliated to various Infantry Regiments and Engineer Regiment (TA) for maintenance of Line of Control Fencing. Now, one Composite Eco Task Force for National Mission for Clean Ganga is under raising at Allahabad..

Territorial Army comprises of several entities of forces who assist in different ways like:

Territorial Army Recruitment: Eligibility Criteria
  • Nationality Only citizens of India (male and female).
  • Age Limits 18 to 42 years on the date of application.

Education qualification for Territorial Army

Soldier GD: 10th/High School/Matric pass with 45% in aggregate and 33% in each subjects. No percentage limit in case candidates have higher qualification as Intermediate/10+2/Higher Secondary.

Soldier Clerk:  Intermediate/10+2/Higher Secondary pass in any stream (Arts, Commerce Science) with 60% marks in aggregate and 50% in each subject. Should have studied and passed English and Maths/Accts Book Keeping in Class X or Class XII with 50% marks in each subject.

Soldier Tradesmen : 8th pass/10th pass / ITI

Territorial Army syllabus

Territorial Army syllabus is prescribed by the Territorial Army. The syllabus highlights the topics that candidates need to cover for the exam. The standard of the papers in Elementary Mathematics will be of Matriculation level. The standard of papers in other subjects will be at the graduate level. Territorial Army Exam Pattern

According to the Territorial Army exam pattern, the exam comprises two papers-I and II. Paper I of Territorial Army comprises topics from Reasoning and Elementary Mathematics. Paper-II will have questions from General Knowledge and English. The total marks for the exam.

Reasoning: The question paper will be designed to test candidates’ logical reasoning. Questions are asked from Statements, Figures, Letters, etc.

Elementary Mathematics

Arithmetic Number System – natural numbers, integers, rational and real numbers. Fundamental operations – addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, square roots, decimal fraction.
Unitary Method Time and distance, time and work, percentages, application to simple and compound interest, profit and loss, ratio and proportion, variation
Elementary Number Theory Division algorithm, prime and composite numbers. Tests of divisibility by 2, 3, 4, 5, 9 & 11. Multiples and factors, factorization theorem, HCF and LCM. Euclidean algorithm, logarithms to base 10, laws of logarithms, use of logarithmic tables
Algebra Basic operations, simple factors, remainder theorem, HCF, LCM, theory of polynomials, solutions of quadratic equations, the relation between its roots and coefficients (only real roots to be considered). Simultaneous linear equations in two unknowns-analytical and graphical solutions. Simultaneous linear equations in two variables and their solutions. Practical problems leading to two simultaneous linear equations or equations in two variables or quadratic equations in one variable and their solutions. Set language and set notation, rational expressions and conditional identities, laws of indices
Trigonometry Sine x, cosine x, tangent x when O°
Geometry Lines and angles, plane and plane figures theorems. Properties of angles at a point, Parallel lines, Sides and angles of a triangle, Congruency of triangles, Similar triangles, Concurrence of medians and altitudes, Properties of angles, sides and diagonals of a parallelogram, rectangle and square, Circle and its properties, including tangents and normal and Loci.
Mensuration Areas of squares, rectangles, parallelograms, triangle and circles. Areas of figures which can bisect into the figures (field book). Surface area and volume of cuboids, lateral surface, and volume of a right circular area of cylinders. Surface area and volume of spheres.
Statistics Collection and tabulation of statistical data, graphical representation-frequency polygons, bar charts, pie charts, etc. Measures of central tendency.

General Knowledge: This paper includes the current affairs history of India and the geography of nature, etc.

English: Questions are designed to test the candidates’ understanding of English such as words, grammar and vocabulary. The syllabus includes synonyms, antonyms, reading comprehension, Para jumbles, error spotting, jumbled sentences, sentence correction and fill in the blanks.

Selecttion procedure in Territorial Army

Candidates whose application forms are found correct will be called for screening (written exam followed by interview only if passed in written exam) by a Preliminary Interview Board (PIB), by the respective Territorial Army Group Headquarters.

Successful candidates will further undergo tests at a Service Selection Board (SSB) and Medical Board for final selection.

Vacancies of male and female candidates will be determined as per organisational requirement.

Territorial Army Selection Process for Officers Civilians

Screening: Candidates applying successfully for the exam will be called for screening. The screening comprises a written exam followed by Interview, conducted by a Preliminary Interview Board by the respective Territorial Army Group Headquarters.

Territorial Army Selection Process for Ex-Servicemen

The Ex-Service Officers will be screened by the Army Headquarters Selection Board (ASB) at Additional Directorate General Territorial Army.

The Ex-Service Officers will undergo a medical examination at Armed Forces Clinic followed by their Police Verification for final selection.

Purpose for training

One month basic training in the first year of commission.

Two months annual training camp every year including the first year.

Three months Post Commissioning training within first two years at IMA, Dehradun.

Terms and conditions of services
  1. Territorial Army is part time concept with mandatory two months training in a year and does not provide full time career.
  2. Serving in Territorial Army do not guarantee pension and the same is subject to embodied service as per organisational requirement.
  3. Commission is granted in the rank of Lieutenant.
  4. Pay and Allowances and privileges will be same as Regular Army Officers when embodied for training and military service.
  5. Promotions upto Lt Col by time scale subject to fulfilling laid down criteria. Promotion to Colonel and Brigadier by selection.
  6. Officers commissioned in Infantry TA may be called out for military service for longer duration depending on the requirement.

The standard of the papers in Elementary Mathematics will be of matriculation level. The standard of papers in other subjects will be of graduation level.

The qualifying marks for the written exam are 40% marks in each part and the overall average is 50%.

Selection of Officers under Ex-Servicemen category will be done through an Interview only.

The exam pattern of Territorial Army for Civilians comprises two papers. Paper 1 comprises Reasoning and Elementary Mathemtics and Paper 2 comprises General Knowledge and English. Each paper is held for 2 hours. Each section will have 50 questions and carries 50 marks.
